Dawn on the US-Mexico border and an American border patrol agent is looking for illegal immigrants. These are the opening shots for a sequence of films for a new Open University course, Life in a Globalised World. The DVDs will be the lead resource for the course.
The US-Mexico border is the only place on the planet where the first world has a land border with the third world. As such it presents the filmmaker and the student with an excellent opportunity to see globalisation in action. In two DVDs, totalling nearly four hours of material, issues such as the price of jobs, water extraction, migration and bio-diversity are delivered in documentary form and as rigorous academic analyses. The immediacy of the border is brought to life through diverse characters such as Jose, a Mexican attempting to enter the US as an illegal immigrant; Yuridia, a worker in a maquiladora, a US owned factory on the Mexican side of the border and Jimmie, a Texan fruit farmer who relies on water extracted from the Rio Grande.
The films were shot on new High Definition cameras and demonstrate high production values. With 24 separate films the mapping of the DVD posed a complex challenge. To help students navigate their way around the material there is a unique A-Z index which takes the user to the characters and sequences that they want to view.
