"Quite honestly, the government didn’t actually want too many people getting into this debate."
Michael Meacher, Minister for the Environment (1997 - 2003) interviewed by 186 Media. In the summer of 2003 the Labour government staged a 'national debate' - an attempt to educate the public and engage them in the issue of the Genetic Modification of crops. At stake was the formation of government policy and a decision on whether or not to authorise the growing of genetically modified crops in this country.
186 Media’s film for the Open University politics department explores the background and staging of the debate through archive material and interviews with key figures at the heart of the debate – politicians, scientists, activists and members of the public. The result is a fascinating insight into how government policy is created and how different interest groups fight for the hearts and minds of the public and the politicians.
